Common GI Problems in Women

Irritable Bowel Syndrome:

This is commonly known as IBS and affects the large intestine. Symptoms include abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. Treatment can involve lifestyle changes such as dietary modifications, exercise, relaxation techniques, and stress management. In addition to this pharmacological treatments are also available for reducing symptoms of IBS where necessary.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease:

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease occurs when stomach acid travels up into the esophagus causing a burning sensation in the chest or throat which is usually accompanied by regurgitation of food or liquid. Lifestyle modifications such as diet changes, quitting smoking and weight loss may be beneficial in relieving Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease symptoms. Medication may also be used if lifestyle modifications are insufficient.

Endometriosis:

This is a condition in which tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside of it, usually in the abdominal cavity or pelvis. Common symptoms include pelvic pain, painful periods, and gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea, constipation, and bloating. Endometriosis can be managed through medication, and hormone therapy, and in some cases, surgery may be necessary.

Diverticulitis:

This is a complication of diverticulosis, where small pouches form on the walls of the colon and become infected. Symptoms often include abdominal pain, fever, and nausea among other things. Treatment involves antibiotics to reduce infection followed by a high-fiber diet and sometimes surgery may be necessary.

Celiac Disease:

This is an autoimmune disorder in which the ingestion of gluten, a protein found in wheat, leads to inflammation of the small intestine and can cause damage to its lining. Symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloating, fatigue and malnutrition. Treatment involves following a strict gluten-free diet as well as taking nutritional supplements if necessary.
